Chadwick Boseman, "Black Panther" actor, dies 7:32

(CNN) - Actor Chadwick Boseman, who died Friday after a battle with colon cancer, played heroes like Jackie Robinson and Thurgood Marshall on the big screen, as well as fictional characters like Black Panther.

Following news of his death, his colleagues and friends paid tribute to whom they saw as a true hero. A man who fought his own health battle for four years while doing impeccable and energetic work, something that many actors could only do throughout his life, a life much longer than Boseman did.

Here are some of the messages:

Former President Barack Obama

“Chadwick came to the White House to work with children when he was playing Jackie Robinson. It was immediately apparent that he was blessed. Being young, talented and black (to be young, gifted, and Black); use that power to give heroes to look up to; to do it all while suffering - what use of his years.

Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios and Creative Director of Marvel

“Chadwick's passing is absolutely devastating. He was our T'Challa, our Black Panther, and our dear friend. Every time he went on set, he radiated charisma and joy, and every time he appeared on screen, he left an impression. He embodied incredible characters in his work, and no one better than him to bring great men to life. He was just as smart, kind, powerful and strong as the characters he played. Now, like them, he has his place in eternity. The Marvel Studios family deeply mourns his loss, and together with his family, we are grieving tonight. " (Via statement to CNN)

Mark Ruffalo

I had the honor of having shared with you on the screen and having crossed paths with you during the press conferences. “Chadwick was someone who radiated power and peace. That he knew how to make his voice heard. Who took the trouble to see how you were doing and to give you words of encouragement when you felt insecure. I am honored to have the memories that I have. The conversations, the laughs. My heart is with you and your family. We will miss you and we will never forget you. Rest in power and peace, my friend.

Chadwick and I were destined to meet, to be family. But what many don't know is that our story began long before his historic debut as Black Panther. During the Black Panther premiere party, Chadwick reminded me of something. He whispered to me that when I received my honors degree from Howard University, his alma mater, he was the student assigned to accompany me that day. And here we were, years later, as friends and colleagues, enjoying the most glorious night of my life! We spent weeks getting ready, working, sitting next to each other every morning, in the makeup section, getting ready for the day together as mother and son. I am honored that we enjoyed such a complete great experience. The dedication of this young man was impressive, his smile contagious, his talent unreal. So I pay tribute to a beautiful spirit, an accomplished artist, a soulful brother… 'You are not dead, but you have flown away…'. Everything you owned, Chadwick, you freely surrendered. Rest now, sweet prince.

Whoopi goldberg

“One of my all-time favorite people on the planet, Chadwick Boseman, passed away after 4 years fighting cancer. A wonderful actor and a really nice man. R.IP. condolences to his family.
