A 38-year-old Dutch tourist was killed yesterday (Friday) when he was attacked by a polar bear in a tent at a campsite in the Svalbard Islands. The rare incident occurred in an archipelago in the Norwegian Arctic region at dusk. The victim was identified as Johan Jacobs Cotta, a Dutch citizen.

"The bear was shot by people on the spot and walked towards the airport near it," said Deputy Governor Solvay Al-Bdal. "Shortly afterwards he (the bear) was found dead in the airport parking lot."

Polar bears are considered a protected species and shooting them is only allowed by law as a last resort and for self-defense. The last time a person was killed by an animal was in 2011, when the victim was a 17-year-old boy.

The Svalbard Islands are located between the northern tip of the European continent and the North Pole and are covered with mountains and snow-covered glaciers. According to the Norwegian Bureau of Statistics and the Institute of Arctic Research in the country, the islands are home to 2,939 people and 975 polar bears.

Outside the populated areas of Svalbard people are required by law to carry animal smuggling or self-defense equipment, and authorities even recommend that visitors carry weapons instead.

The various activities of human beings on the islands have been expanding over the years, especially in the field of tourism and scientific research. In addition, the reduction in the area of glaciers in an area that is melting is leading to a reduction in the migratory territory of polar bears. As a result, encounters on islands between humans and animals, which can be fatal, become more common.
