The Sofitel Roma Villa Borghese hotel: the expert opinion of Le Figaro

2020-08-30T07:13:14.252Z

Located in a quiet street at the top of Fellini's beloved Via Veneto, this elegant hotel was completely redesigned last year by architect and decorator Jean-Philippe Nuel.

9/10 for the Sofitel Roma Villa Borghese

Elegant 19th century palace adjoining the Aurélien ramparts and the park of Villa Borghese, this small Sofitel with 78 rooms and suites is a refined cocoon, out of sight, where it is good to rest after a day of exploring Rome and its wonders. The architect Jean-Philippe Nuel has perfectly succeeded in preserving the building's Roman identity while infusing it with a little of this French art de vivre, specific to the Sofitel brand. We relax in the large classic and bright rooms, while the air is more frizzy in the lobby and the Settimo restaurant, with bright colors, which immerse us in the Italian landscapes.

9/10 The situation

The hotel is located in a residential street just behind via Veneto, immortalized by Federico Fellini in La Dolce Vita . Villa Borghese Park and its museum are at the end of the street, while the Trevi Fountain or the Spanish Steps are a 20-minute walk away. Close to tourist sites, the hotel nevertheless has the air of a cozy refuge, sheltered from the bustle of Rome.

8/10 The decor

From the lobby, whose red and green marble pavement is inspired by typically Roman cosmatesque mosaics, Italian exuberance is everywhere. It continues in the corridors where details of ancient statues contrast with the red walls and the doors of the rooms in black lacquer. On the top floor, the Settimo restaurant, decorated with vegetal inspiration, with its many plants and floral fabrics, is a proscenium of Villa Borghese whose tops of umbrella pines form an immense carpet. This profusion of colors contrasts with the elegant sobriety of the rooms, with a chic and soothing "French touch".

    9/10 The bedrooms

The 71 rooms and 7 suites are spread over 6 floors, most of them offering a bird's eye view of the gardens of Villa Borghese (in particular the suites with terraces). With the inimitable Sofitel MyBed, which is very difficult to get out of, they offer designer furniture in light tones enhanced by superb photos of antique statues as well as a Renaissance-inspired fresco on the ceiling. In the white marble bathrooms, the mirrors turn into a television. Ideal for taking a bath while watching La Dolce Vita ...

    8/10 The service, the facilities

Since its renovation a year ago, the hotel has been enriched with a fitness room but it does not have a spa. Running fans will have the opportunity to run through the beautiful alleys of Villa Borghese with a personal trainer. The hotel concierge also offers private tours of some palaces usually closed to the public, such as Villa Ludovisi, located just in front of the Sofitel. You can admire the works of Guercino and Caravaggio while drinking tea with Princess Boncompagni-Ludovisi, owner of the premises. Original tours are also offered in the footsteps of Shelley, Keats and Goethe who lived in Rome in the 19th century. Note, the hotel has three rooms for private meetings.

9/10 At the table and at the bar

On the 7th floor, the Settimo restaurant serves as both a breakfast room and a restaurant, open for lunch and dinner. In addition to the tasty cuisine of chef Giuseppe d'Alessio who reenacts the great Italian classics in general, Roman in particular (Tonarelli Cacio e pepe of very good quality), the strong point of Settimo is undoubtedly its terrace overlooking the garden of the Borghese villa, the Medici villa and the dome of Saint Peter's Basilica in the distance. At sunset, when the Roman sky is set ablaze, the panorama is extraordinary. A must to drink a cocktail in good company. Menus at 29 € in the restaurant and 34 € on the terrace.

    9/10 The price-quality ratio

With rooms starting at € 350 per night and suites starting at € 1150 (without breakfast), the Sofitel Roma Villa Borghese is more in the lower range of 5-star Roman rates. An absolutely correct price for a completely refurbished hotel with a splendid panoramic terrace.
