Inspectors in Australia have captured a 4.4-meter crocodile in a tourist area in the north of the country, a senior supervisory authority official said today (Monday).

This is the largest capture in the region in recent years.

John Booker, a senior inspector in the town of Katherine, said the 350-pound crocodile was caught in the Flora River, about 120 miles southwest of the town.

He said three years ago a 4.7-meter crocodile was caught in the same area, but was caught in the Katherine River, which is closer to the sea.

He said he was unaware of the larger size crocodile ever caught in the Flora River.

The numbers of crocodiles in the tropics of northern Australia have been steadily increasing since federal law made them protected species in the early 1970s.

"They're multiplying completely, which is part of the reason we have management areas - to reduce the numbers in tourist areas so that there are fewer opportunities for encounters between the saltines and the people," said Burke, referring to the type of crocodiles, sea crocodiles.

The captured crocodile was taken to a crocodile farm, as part of a stud program.

Crocodiles kept on farms are allowed to be killed for food or skin.
