Ukrainian media reported today (Monday) that a fire broke out in the Jewish cemetery in the city of Uman, and that some of the tombstones in the area were slightly damaged.
According to a report by the Ukrainian news site Pro Vasa, the fire broke out in the old cemetery located in the east of the city.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze, which was made possible mainly due to a large amount of dry grass in the area.
Authorities in the state claimed that the fire may have been caused as a result of the heavy heat and dry grass in the compound but did not rule out the possibility of intentional arson.
Authorities in the city of Uman, including the mayor, Alexander Tzibri, have in recent weeks expressed strong opposition to the arrival of Hasidim to the city to mark Rosh Hashanah at Rabbi Nachman's grave, due to the escalation of the corona plague in the country and fears of foreigners arriving from Red City.
While the mayor insisted that there was no antisemitic motive behind the media campaign to be a leader, during which he stated that he would block the entrance to the city with improvised checkpoints, there is now growing concern that anger over the Ukrainian government's will increase antisemitic activity in the region.
