Senior Democrats have accused US President Donald Trump of inciting street violence after being killed by gunfire during clashes in the city of Portland between rival groups of protesters.

Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential candidate, said Trump "encourages irresponsible violence," and Mayor Ted Wheeler, also Democratic, that the Republican president is the one creating "chaos and division" in America. This is after Trump said the Portland mayor allowed "death and destruction in his city."

Portland has become one of the hotbeds of protest against police violence and racism since the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25. In recent days, Trump supporters have arrived in the Democratic city of Oregon, and the victim is reportedly a member of the far-right movement.

The mayor warned those who want to come to the city demanding revenge, after posts on social media. "To those of you who say on Twitter this morning that they plan to come to Portland to seek revenge, I urge you to keep your distance," Wheeler said. He said the president of the United States should "support us or not intervene." Some city activists have called for Wheeler to resign, saying his handling of the crisis led to the shooting incident.

Trump presents himself as president of law and order ahead of the November election, describing Biden and the Democrats as acting softly against crime. He reiterated his threat to send federal forces to the city after those deployed there last month to the displeasure of authorities and protesters.

"Portland will never recover with a stupid mayor," Trump tweeted. He accused Biden of "not wanting to lead."
