  • The construction of the bicycle garages at the Penzberg train station should start shortly

  • Space will be created there for around 150 bicycles

  • The facility should be more beautiful and modern

Penzberg - Right next to the platform in Penzberg you can currently see a long construction fence.

Until recently, the old bicycle racks were located there under a perforated corrugated iron roof.

The dilapidated facility - space for around 80 bicycles - was demolished along with a small Eternit garage from the neighboring town house.

In order to bridge the time until the completion of the new Radl multi-storey car park, the car park of the former post office has been equipped with bike racks - a few meters away on Philippstrasse.

The new parking garage for bicycles at Penzberg train station is to be more modern and beautiful - but above all, it is also larger than the previous facility.

It should - so it was decided by the city council - offer space for 150 bicycles on two levels.

The facility will be covered and construction is scheduled to begin on September 21.

Completion, according to Johann Eßel from the civil engineering department, is scheduled for next December.

What a bicycle parking garage looks like can recently be seen in Freising, albeit to a far greater extent.

There, in August, the Deutsche Bahn inaugurated a “Bike and Ride” facility for 800 bicycles, also two-story and mostly covered.

It is the largest modern parking facility to date as part of the “Bike and Ride” offensive, the railway announced.

According to the company, such concepts are currently available for more than 100 train stations across Germany.

Different sums were given for the costs

In Penzberg, work will start on September 21 with the foundation for the later roof.

According to Eßel, this means: First they dig, dispose of the peat and fill the pit with various layers of gravel.

The excavator driver has to be careful.

According to Eßel, a sound wave detector was used to check whether ordnance from the Second World War was present.

Indeed there are points of suspicion.

Therefore, according to Eßel, an expert is involved when digging.

The roof is founded or stabilized with either a floor slab or strip foundations.

At the same time, empty pipes for lights, lightning protection and a timetable display - it has so far only been an option - are being laid.

The drainage for the roof into the sewer is also part of the work.

According to Eßel, the parking system itself only has to be placed on the finished pavement and pegged.

As reported, the costs should amount to 284,000 euros.

Before that, however, completely different sums had been mentioned: first 400,000 euros and then even 600,000 euros.

However, the parking garage plans were also larger at the time.

The city council - the discussion about the new facility began in March 2019 after a motion by the Greens - therefore did not give the green light for a long time.

City architect Justus Klement declared the price drop in February 2020 - at that time the city council approved the construction - by making the facility smaller: only 150 instead of 200 parking spaces would be created, a standard roof would be used and savings would be made in the case of demolition, soil replacement and founding.

According to the city, the railway will contribute financially.

The estimate is 60 to 70 percent of the cost.
