Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has confirmed the will of the federal government to continue and complete the construction of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Merkel made a statement on Tuesday in Stralsund at the end of a visit to her constituency against the background of sanctions threats from the US Congress.
"We also consider these extra-territorial sanctions, ie those that go beyond the territory of the United States, to be illegal," said the Chancellor.
In early August, three US senators wrote to the German Baltic Sea port of Sassnitz-Mukran threatening to take punitive action against board members, executives and shareholders.
Nord Stream 2 plays an important role in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's economy.
Pipeline pipes are being shipped from the port of Sassnitz and the Russian gas is to arrive in Lubmin.
It was Merkel's first visit to her constituency in Western Pomerania since the beginning of the corona pandemic.
She met with representatives from clinics and nursing homes as well as school principals and teachers.
She stressed that priorities need to be set for the further course of the pandemic.
"The economy has to keep going as far as possible."
Daycare centers and schools should be kept open.
