Defense against enemy sabotage and reconnaissance troops: The Belarusian military also tried this scenario on Monday not far from the borders with Poland and Lithuania.

The recordings were published by the army and broadcast on state television.

The ruler Lukashenko had previously stated that the demonstrations in the former Soviet republic were controlled "from outside".

He had repeatedly threatened to use the army.

The maneuver not far from the EU border underlines the threat - and distracts from internal protests.

This went on unabated: In the capital Minsk, hundreds of students boycotted the start of the new academic year on Tuesday and protested against the regime.

Security forces intervened and several students were arrested.

Last Sunday, numerous people were arrested in a demonstration with more than 100,000 participants.

Ruler Lukashenko had armored personnel carriers deployed - and promised possible reforms.

The opposition was unimpressed: it announced the founding of a new party via video message: "Wmestje" - translated: "Together".

Maria Kolesnikowa, co-founder of "Vmestye"

"In the past three months we have all achieved more together than in the past 26 years. Together we have collected over half a million signatures. Together we have fought and will continue to fight - for freedom and for our future."

The new party wants to work for a constitutional change.

Only with a limitation of the term of office for the president, separation of powers and the strengthening of parliament could there be a new system of government, it said.
