The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borell, on Tuesday 1 September described as "
absolute priority
" the Libyan issue, during a trip to Tripoli, where he discussed ways to strengthen the ceasefire and revive talks between rival powers.
"
Libya remains the top priority of the European Union
(EU)," Borell tweeted after meeting with the head of the unity government (GNA), Fayyez al-Sarraj, and members of his cabinet.

"
We welcome the recent ceasefire agreement and continue to support dialogue and political settlement
," continued the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, who arrived in Tripoli at midday, GNA headquarters.
"Advancing the EU's efforts"
Libya has been in chaos for years, torn between rival camps: the GNA in the West, recognized by the UN, and a power in the East embodied to this day by Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
On August 22, these warring parties separately announced a ceasefire and upcoming elections.
All previous attempts at settlement have failed.
These announcements of a ceasefire and a resumption of the political process "
create new hope
" for a peaceful solution, however, Josep Borell said, in a statement on behalf of the 27 member countries of the EU.
In office since the end of 2019, this is Mr. Borell's first visit to Libya, where he hopes to "
advance the EU's efforts
" in favor of "
the resumption of political dialogue
" in this country plagued by multiple foreign interference, also said on Twitter his spokesperson, Peter Stano.
The GNA has benefited for several months from increased military support from Turkey, while Camp Haftar has been supported by the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Egypt.
Within the EU, countries like France and Italy have repeatedly flaunted their disagreements over Libya, where chaos set in after the fall of Muammar Gadhafi's regime in 2011.
