The video of this hooking up to a protester went viral in January.
So much so that the former Minister of the Interior Christophe Castaner and the President of the Republic had been forced to react, the latter speaking of "unacceptable behavior".
The police officer who made this famous gesture in January in the streets of Toulouse was sentenced on Tuesday to a suspended fine of 1,500 euros.
The official was also ordered to pay 1,600 euros in damages to the victim "for moral prejudice and legal costs," said the news site Actu Toulouse.
The Toulouse prosecutor had opened an investigation in this case for "violence by a person holding public authority" which he had entrusted to the IGPN.
An "idiot-useful" policeman
"I was not injured but I experienced the whole as something very violent," Lea, the victim, told Mediapart after the verdict.
At the time, already, I took a few steps after getting up and when the cops let go, I collapsed in tears.
[…] At no time is the systemic violence of the police in question.
And by being indignant about this story, the State spares the trouble of looking it in the face.
"
Julien Brel, one of the two lawyers of the victim, described the police officer as "idiot-useful" to the pure-player, in comparison to other cases of more violent police violence (yellow vests worn out, amputees ...) : “If he must answer today for his actions, it is because there was a video.
He is a little left in the pasture, we use his gesture not to question in depth the methods of maintaining order in France.
