SPIEGEL survey: large majority of Germans condemn protests against corona politics

Those who demonstrate against the Corona regulations cannot appeal to the population: three quarters of Germans have no understanding. Only among AfD supporters is there an opposite trend.

From the protest against the government's anti-corona measures last Saturday, there were pictures of demonstrators who vilified politicians and scientists.

And from Corona deniers and right-wing radicals who occupied the steps of the Reichstag building with Reich flags.

The 300 or so extremists and fellow travelers threatened to break into parliament on the sidelines of the protests.

This aggressive protest is in contradiction to the generally edifying situation in Germany and the success of the measures taken so far.

Although the number of infections rose sharply over the summer and with the travel time, the number of seriously ill and dead people has so far stagnated.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier also revised economic expectations upwards for this year.

And the federal government does not expect a second lockdown in the coming months.

Accordingly, a large majority of Germans have no understanding for the demonstrators.

This was the result of a representative survey by the opinion research institute Civey for SPIEGEL.

Around two-thirds of Germans firmly reject the protests, while another eleven percent are more likely to be against it.

Thus, 76 percent in total disagree with the demonstrations.

That is around two percentage points less than in the previous month, so to a certain extent unchanged.

About one in five, however, has "definitely" or "more or less" understanding.

At 21 percent, this is also around two percentage points more than in the previous survey.

The main opposition to the protests comes from supporters of the governing parties.

For example, 90 percent of the Union and SPD voters each have no understanding for such demonstrations against the rules of the federal and state governments.

On the other hand, AfD supporters show the greatest understanding: four fifths support the demonstrations.

Here approval has risen significantly since the previous month - back then the value was 67 percent.

The 40 to 49 age group has the greatest support for the protests;

the lowest among the younger (18 to 29 years) and older (65 and over).

The state of Berlin drew conclusions from the protests that had gotten out of control over the past weekend and introduced a mask requirement for such events.

The change in the law is "an important signal" to the organizers, said Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD).
