Deng Jianhua, the secretary of the Trade Union Union, was arrested on the day of the anti-mask law march on October 6 last year. After being taken back to the Mong Kok Police Station, he was found with a telescopic stick and was charged with the crime of possession of offensive weapons. Day) The trial was opened at the Kowloon City Court. Deng decided to plead guilty shortly before the trial, saying that the stick was only picked up and kept in a backpack without use.

The magistrate stated that although the telescopic rod was hidden in the backpack, it was a weapon with great lethality and sentenced the defendant to immediate imprisonment for 4 months.

Defendant Deng Jianhua (31 years old), an officer of the Trade Union Union, was charged with possession of a telescopic baton in the Mong Kok Police Station on October 6 last year.

According to the case, the police saw the crowd blocking the road in Waterloo Road on the night of the incident. After issuing a warning, the crowd fled to Dorset Street.

The police arrested the defendant on Dolce Street and took him back to Mong Kok Police Station. They also found telescopic sticks and rubber straps in his backpack.

Begging to find it on the road

The defense pleaded that when the defendant was intercepted by the police, the telescopic stick was hidden in his backpack instead of being held in his hand. He had never used the telescopic stick and the stick was only found on the road.

The defense submitted three more letters of plea, including a letter co-written by the Director-General of the Trade Union Meng Zhaoda and the foreign domestic helper of the Hong Kong Asian Domestic Workers Union. Both letters praised his support to the foreign domestic helper.

The telescopic stick is a lethal weapon

The magistrate pointed out that according to the High Court's case concerning appellant Weng Weicheng's involvement in the possession of telescopic sticks and laser pointers, the court should consider the number, type, nature, and intention of possession of weapons when considering sentencing.

Although the telescopic stick involved was hidden in the defendant's backpack, it was a powerful weapon that could extend to 50 cm, could be reused and was heavy, and was not suitable for a non-custodial sentence.
