Homs farmers continue to harvest the almond crop for the current agricultural season in light of abundant production and remunerative marketing prices.
Engineer Nazih Al-Rifai, Director of Homs Agriculture, revealed in a statement to the SANA Economic Bulletin that the governorate leads the production at the country level in terms of cultivated areas and the amount of production, as the area planted with almonds reached 587355 dunums and the number of trees is 22.3 million trees, most of which are planted in Ola, while production for the current agricultural season is estimated at 9,6676. Tons, an increase of 34 thousand tons.
Al-Rifai indicated that the cultivation of almonds is concentrated in the villages of the eastern countryside of Homs, where all the appropriate environmental and climatic conditions are available for cultivation, such as the dry climate and little rain, pointing out that the production this season is better than the previous season, and its cultivation is witnessing a remarkable expansion.
During a tour by SANA in the areas of planting and harvesting almonds, farmer Mahmoud Odeh from the village of Al-Rayyan explained that he has about twenty dunums of almonds, and the production this year is very good, and the marketing prices are remunerative and differ according to the type and method of sale.
For his part, Gebran Al-Hajj, head of the agricultural extension unit in Al-Rayyan, indicated that the areas planted with almonds in the village amount to about 150 thousand dunums that secure an important source of income for the people of the region and the productivity is good this year, as well as the prices, indicating the existence of centers for sorting, packaging and marketing in the village, which provides job opportunities and added value to the crop.
The province's production of almonds for the last season was 62,681 tons.
