Almost 12 hours after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced during his Government Report that the massacres had ended with his coming to power, a group of people opened fire during a wake in Cuernavaca, capital of the State of Morelos, and killed eight people, including two minors.

According to the first testimonies, two vans arrived Tuesday night at an address in the Antonio Baraona de Cuernavaca neighborhood where the wake of a young motorcyclist was held, who would have died instantly on Monday afternoon when hitting the retaining wall in the Express Pass.

The group opened fire on the gathered family and friends, killing eight people.

In addition, it left 14 wounded, who were transferred to different hospitals.

Among the deceased there are two young people aged 15 and 16.

One of the bodies was found inside a Tsuru vehicle, with a Morelos license plate, outside a hospital in the Delicias neighborhood, although it was not specified whether it was one of the people who were at the wake or was one of the the attackers.

According to the first investigations, the murderers used high-caliber weapons "that would be related to other high-impact crimes recently registered, and in which there is the participation of members of organized crime," said in a statement the Morelos prosecutor's office.

Local media pointed out that on Wednesday morning there was another shooting in the same Cuernavaca neighborhood, although so far there is no report of injuries or deaths from the incident.

The massacre coincides with several drug blockades in Reynosa (Tamaulipas) published this Wednesday on social networks, which altered the population and complicated the traffic of the border city.

Burning tires were also seen in some parts of the city, some users wrote on Twitter.

The independent senator Emilio Álvarez Icaza pointed out that "the crime is in addition to many other massacres that have occurred in the Lopez Obrador government."

"AMLO's happy figures on security are a mockery for victims and their families in Veracruz, Sonora, Guerrero, Tamaulipas and CDMX," the senator tweeted.

Since López Obrador came to power in December 2018, an average of 99 people have been murdered in Mexico.

In the first 18 months of his government, 53,628 murders were registered, according to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), which means 12,615 more deaths than in the first two years of Enrique Peña Nieto's six-year term, when 41,013 were counted.

Figures predict that 2020 - despite the coronavirus pandemic that caused mass lockdowns - will become the most violent year ever recorded, as reported cases far exceed the first months of last year (17,653).

So far, 2019 had been the most violent year in the recent history of the country, but the current pace suggests that it will be worse in terms of security and violence, an increase that the president attributes to organized crime.
