In consideration of overall public safety last year, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department cancelled the National Day fireworks display on October 1.
The Department invited organizations interested in sponsoring the 2020 National Day fireworks display in June this year. However, the government announced today (2nd) that in response to the epidemic, the National Day fireworks display originally scheduled for October 1 will be cancelled. The National Day fireworks display was cancelled four times, including the first anniversary of the Lamma Shipwreck in 2013, the Umbrella Movement in 2014, and the anti-revision demonstrations in 2019.

Last year, due to the revision of the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance, the turmoil has not subsided. Based on overall public safety considerations, the National Day fireworks were cancelled on October 1.
This year's National Day fireworks cannot escape the fate of suspension. The government announced today (2nd) that in response to the epidemic, the National Day fireworks display originally scheduled to be held in Victoria Harbour on October 1 will be cancelled.
This cancellation is the fourth time that the National Day fireworks display has been cancelled since the return in 1997, and it is also the second time that the National Day fireworks display has been cancelled for two consecutive years.
In June this year, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department publicly invited sponsors. The last National Day fireworks display in Hong Kong was already on October 1, 2018.

In the National Day Fireworks Display in 2012, a ferry "Lamma 4" that was used by the Hong Kong Electric Company to take employees and family members to watch the fireworks collided with the "Hai Tai" of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry, causing a collision on Lamma Island. 39 people were killed and 92 injured.
In 2013, to commemorate the first anniversary of the Lamma shipwreck, the National Day fireworks were cancelled.
By September 28, 2014, the Umbrella Movement broke out. From September 28, Admiralty, Causeway Bay, Mong Kok and other places occupied the longest 79 days, and the National Day fireworks were also cancelled due to the situation.
