The Saudi Arabian government has announced that from today (Wednesday) it will regularly allow flights between Israel and the United Arab Emirates to pass over its airspace.

The announcement comes following an official request from the UAE government, and diplomatic efforts by senior adviser to United States President Jared Kushner.

The El Al 971 flight that took off for Abu Dhabi from Ben Gurion Airport on Monday was the first direct flight of an Israeli commercial airline, which received a permit to fly through Saudi airspace. "Last night, she also passed through Saudi airspace, but this time only the Israeli delegation was on the plane.

In the past two weeks, UAE officials have held talks with the Saudis to make sure they approve flights between the UAE and Israel to pass through their airspace.

The Saudi approval was an important condition for promoting the aviation agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

At the same time, Kushner and White House envoy Avi Berkowitz held parallel talks with the Saudis and asked them to give permission for the permanent move.

Last night, Kushner and Berkowitz met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and raised the issue again.

Ben Salman informed them that he had decided to accede to the UAE request.

In a statement released by the official Saudi news agency, a source in the Civil Aviation Authority said that following a UAE request, it was decided to allow all flights departing from the UAE and landing in the UAE "from all countries of the world" to pass through Saudi airspace.
