Trump Administration Plans to Collect DNA Samples and Other Biometric Information from Legal Migrants

USCIS wants to store facial scans, iris scans, voice recordings and, in some cases, the DNA of those who apply to live or work in the country. The measure will also affect Americans.

The government headed by Donald Trump plans to require more biometric data from immigrants who have applied for or received permanent residence or a work permit to ensure "background checks" before becoming citizens.

The Citizenship and Immigration Service will collect the information, including facial and iris scans, voice recordings and, in some cases, the DNA of those who apply to live or work in the country, says a statement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

DHS did not publish the proposed regulation or give details, but the informational website BuzzFeed News, which obtained a draft, reported on Tuesday that this measure includes a clause that would require the data of anyone who requests some type of immigration benefit, including those already in the country, and of US citizens who sponsor their relatives for immigration.

It usually takes several months for a new regulation to take effect after a public comment period.

This measure will almost certainly lead to legal appeals, as has happened with most of the immigration measures introduced during the Trump presidency.

"It's an extraordinary expansion of surveillance, especially the idea that immigrants could be called in at any time to give that biometric data," said Sarah Pierce, an analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, a think tank on immigration policy.

Applicants for naturalization already provide fingerprints and photos.

DHS said that under the new policy, applicants may also have to give a DNA sample to authorities so they can confirm that they are related to other people in cases where "documentary evidence" is insufficient.

Acting Homeland Security Secretary Ken Cuccinelli characterized the move as a way to improve verification of people's identities and "modernize" the collection of biometric and other data.

“Using available technology to verify an individual's identity is responsible governance,” Cuccinelli said in a written statement, “collecting biometric data further protects against identity theft and frustrates fraudsters who are not who they claim to be. ”.
