Resumption of the Top 14: words of supporters, between spite and frustration

2020-09-03T17:18:29.198Z

Covid-19, spectator gauges, new schedules ... We interviewed five supporters before the start of the 2020-2021 season. They share their uncertainties, their incomprehension, sometimes their anger.

Maxime, La Rochelle: "Afraid that it will stop in a short time"

“It's really a very complicated situation when you see the number of cases there are in each club.

We realize that there are half of the Top 14 clubs that have at least one case of Covid in their workforce.

We are afraid that it will resume but to stop in a short time.

We are 46 members of the Bagnards Rochelais (association of which he is the president) and, for the next match against Toulon, each will have a place.

At least for this match ... After we do not know.

We saw that the tonnage had been increased to 8,000 people.

It is always that taken.

If it then goes down to 5,000 places, we have no guarantees.

The club cannot guarantee that to us compared to other supporters who pay the same rate as us.

There are two other fan clubs in La Rochelle.

We get to hear from the club.

I had Pierre Venayre (the general manager of Stade Rochelais) on the phone following the shutdown last season.

There, we have information in a trickle, he must not have information to provide us.

I wouldn't like to be in the place, it mustn't be easy to keep everyone happy.

We, at our level, we say to ourselves that we will not be able to go to the match, we are sad.

But we hope that the club will survive this episode.

There was a demand for a 12,000-seat gauge, eventually it will be 8,000.

We will go there little by little. "

“We take the news as it comes and we will adapt.

Everyone is in the same boat ”

“It's complicated for a lot of clubs.

When I hear President Lacroix in Toulouse say that he has the budget to last a month and a half before going out of business, it's worrying.

A little less for clubs which have a president who has a lot of money.

Otherwise, the other clubs, like us, rely on their ticketing, their partnerships, their refreshments and the sale of shirts.

We don't know if all our members will be able to go to the match.

We don't know for the away matches either, we did at least five per season.

We do not know if we will be able to continue to do them.

We are a small association and to recover funds, it's complicated.

Travel is a big third of our budget.

For the away matches, we know the dates three weeks before, it was already complicated to book buses and hotel rooms.

There, we can not predict anything in advance.

We take the news as it comes and we will adapt.

Everyone is in the same boat.

And with the new hours, either Friday evening or Sunday evening, it will be even more complicated to go to the stadium.

There are some who work on Friday evenings.

And on Sunday evenings, there are others who hire early on Monday.

We talked about it among us ... It doesn't suit us but we have no choice, it's frustrating. "

Lucien, Stade Français: "The new timetables are too complicated"

“Already, last season, I had not resumed subscription.

Last year, I only went to four matches, including a friendly match in Aurillac and the trip to Brive.

As soon as they started to change the schedules, it got complicated for me.

The European Cup in midweek was already out of the question.

Friday night, after a big week of work, I'm exhausted.

Sunday evening, 8:45 p.m., it makes me come home at midnight, up on Monday at 5 a.m., it's not possible.

The atmosphere also disappointed me.

I caught myself leaving during matches the last season when I was a member ... I had been a member since 1995. The season ahead?

She should already get to start.

We have a billionaire at the head of the club (Hans-Peter Wild, Editor's note), we should get out of it but it could be complicated for small clubs.

Are they going to have tax exemptions? "

"For me, rugby is Saturday or Sunday afternoon, after a good meal!"

“I also heard that clubs that play Friday night or Sunday night could be compensated, but how high?

When the new Jean-Bouin was inaugurated, I was happy.

I did a season with the Friends of the Stade Français, it didn't please me.

I went back to subscribe on my own.

This season, if there are not too bad times, I will return to the stadium.

I remain a supporter of Stade Français.

I loved Canal + when it filmed matches well, now I blame them a bit ... For me, rugby is Saturday or Sunday afternoon, after a good meal!

(Smile) Since rugby turned professional things have gotten worse.

And then, if there are only billionaire clubs, it will quickly become boring.

I had gotten to the point where I would rather be disgusted in front of my TV than leave the stadium at halftime. "

Benjamin, Toulouse: "We were told nothing special"

“We have two family memberships, we got them back last week.

The problem is that for the moment we have no communication from the club.

We weren't told anything special when we got the subscriptions.

We don't really know what will happen against La Rochelle for the first home game (Saturday 12 September).

Will it be a 5,000-seat gauge?

The same goes for the Champions Cup quarter-final against Ulster.

We still have the seats we bought in February.

I believe there had already been 17,000 or 18,000 sold at the Stadium, before the sales were stopped.

We have been waiting for this European quarter-final at home for 9 years.

We are in the dark. ”

"We don't really know how many subscriptions there are and how it will play out for places ..."

“I also believe that they have not stopped subscriptions as was the case in Brive or Pau.

We don't really know how many subscriptions there are and how it will play out for places ... We are in the dark for the moment.

I think they are still negotiating with the prefect for the gauges.

If there is no improvement, they will have to communicate next week so that we have more visibility for the match against La Rochelle and the quarter-final.

We renewed our subscription like every season, there were no problems.

My mother has been a subscriber for 41 years, my father a little less.

And me, they've taken me to the stadium since I was 5-6 and 24.

Toulouse was placed in the red zone and the prefect said he would refuse any exemption from the 5,000-person gauge.

After we have no more news ... In my opinion, there are already more than 5,000 subscribers, the gauge is already exceeded.

We are waiting. "

Thierry, Toulon: "A lack as much sporting as social"

“I am part of an association, the Sons of Besagne, I asked the president for information.

In Mayol, there can only be 5,000 people.

I attended a preparation match between two teams from Toulon, we are 4,800, it was absolutely sad.

We even talk among ourselves of going to see small matches, in La Valette-du-Var or La Seyne-sur-Mer, where we are 300-400 people but we see the rugby that we love.

We are there ... This year, I did not resume subscription.

In Toulon, they are optimistic but we are not.

The frustration comes from the fact that most of us think this stuff is not going to end.

The season promises to be really complicated, which is what is frustrating.

At the start of the Covid, we understood that we had to prioritize health.

After that, a certain lack is installed.

As much social as sporting.

Rugby, we like it but I also like having a drink with my friends before the match, having a snack after.

It's not just rugby that's frustrating.

To be honest, this rugby has frustrated me for 10 years (Laughs). ”

"This Goze-Laporte fight, it takes me even further away from rugby"

“I'm older than the others, I'm 65, that's not my rugby!

This Goze-Laporte brawl takes me even further away from rugby.

I will go back to see matches of small clubs in the surrounding villages.

Because that's not us anymore, we closed our eyes because we won everything for a few years.

But, well, these players who become untouchable are not our thing.

The other day, I went to the training center, there was a security guard!

What is that ?

(Laughs) The 5,000 gauge is unthinkable for us.

There was already a drop in attendance in recent seasons, we were lying to each other, "we love the club", "here it's different" ... We feel that we are out of step with the team.

And the Covid makes us realize that it is not necessarily rugby that we like.

Then we add the new Canal + schedules.

Playing on Friday evenings and Sunday evenings will empty the stadiums, as we know ... It's no longer a sport for spectators.

At the time, I was playing in group 2, the equivalent of the second division.

We had two or three training sessions a week, we ended up in a club each time ... (Laughs) Rugby is a bit like that. "

Clément, Racing 92: "We are completely in the dark"

“We are completely in the dark about the recovery when we see the number of cases that appear in each club and the directives of the League.

Regarding the matches at the Arena, we are sure to be there as a subscriber.

After that, it will depend on whether the prefect of Hauts-de-Seine decides to lower the gauge or not.

With my partner, we have attended, for three years, the last 94 matches away from Racing and here too we are also in the dark.

We attended the last two preparatory matches in Bourgoin (against Lyon) and Brive.

We are trying to find solutions to attend away matches.

We are looking for places for Saturday's match in Lyon.

We do not know what it will give, we want to continue our series!

Stopping at 94 would be a bit stupid ... We try to find all the strategies to avoid being banished after so much investment. "

"It's a bit like the season when we wait ... We have no visibility"

“For Saturday's match in Lyon, we discussed with the club to see if it can provide us with solutions.

We also discuss with Lyon supporters associations.

But it is quite complicated because of the health situation in Lyon.

Fingers crossed ... We know that Racing has made contact with Lyon but they are not going to force the hand of Lyonnais to welcome opposing supporters.

We'll see.

We have booked train tickets and a hotel room, but everything can be canceled at the last moment.

The European Cup, with our quarter-final in Clermont, comes quickly after, it's a mess too.

It's in three weeks.

The club has already told us that there will be no travel by train but by bus.

50 supporters in a bus, with the masks, we do not know if this will be well respected.

We will therefore go to Clermont by car but we have no information on places.

The gauge has changed in Clermont.

It's kind of the season when we wait ... We have no visibility.

Last season, we had the match schedules two to three weeks before.

There, the schedule changes, the matches on Friday evening, that annoys us.

For the supporters who travel, it promises to be very, very complicated. "
