The fires in the Amazon forest in Brazil in August are the worst in the last decade, and that the data on the amount of fires in the forest must be corrected, the scientist in charge of the data in Brazil said last night (Wednesday).

The country's media previously reported that the fires in the rainforest area fell by 5% in August, based on incorrect data found on the website of the government space research agency "Infa".

Alberto Stetter, a senior scientist at Inpa, which produces official fire data, said the final data report was delayed due to a NASA satellite error. 2% in August 2020 compared to the same month a year ago, ”he said.

The Ministry of Science and Technology, which oversees the space research agency, did not respond at this time to Statzer's remarks.

President Jair Bolsonaro's office declined to comment, referring questions to Vice President Hamilton Murray, who is in charge of the Amazon fires.

Moreau's office did not respond to a request for comment.

A spokeswoman for the country's environment ministry also declined to comment at this time.

The rise in fires in August 2019 that culminated in a nine-year high has sparked outcry from world leaders and the public who are outraged that Brazil is not doing enough to protect the world’s largest rainforests.

Environmentalists and scientists have said Bolsonaro is guilty of weakening environmental defenses and calling for the development of the Amazon, strengthening illegal loggers and land speculators to clear the forest.

The Amazon has absorbed huge amounts of carbon dioxide as a result of the increase in fires and scientists claim that its protection is essential for curbing climate change.

The Infa Center posted on its website about two weeks ago a note that there was a problem with NASA's Aqua satellite producing the fire data and as a result the data had not been complete since August 16. NASA similarly posted messages on its website warning of Satellite problems.

Stitzer said Infa was looking for alternative data sources to fix the problem, and estimated that it would take a week to two weeks for the final data to be published.
