Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated the necessity of resolving the crisis in Syria politically in accordance with UN Resolution 2254 through Syrian-Syrian dialogue and without external interference.

At the outset of his meeting in Moscow today, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Syria Geir Pedersen said: Russia, as a guarantor state within the Astana framework, supports the efforts of the United Nations to facilitate the work of the Constitutional Discussion Committee in Geneva in line with Security Council Resolution 2254, and it considers that the third round. She concluded last Saturday in Geneva, "It was very successful and useful."

UN Resolution 2254, issued in December 2015, affirms that the Syrians are the ones who determine the future of their country on their own, without any external interference, and that terrorist organizations are outside any political process.

Lavrov stressed the need to preserve the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and to continue the war on terrorism there until it is finally defeated, pointing out that there are many difficulties facing the humanitarian affairs in Syria, especially in light of the spread of the Corona epidemic, which requires lifting the coercive Western economic measures imposed on it.

Lavrov called on the international community to strengthen efforts to assist the displaced Syrians who want to return to their homes, explaining that this will ease the burden on the countries that receive these displaced.

For his part, Pedersen stressed the United Nations' support for efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria in accordance with UN Resolution 2254, including the work of the Constitution Debate Committee, noting the need to lift the economic measures imposed on Syria to improve the humanitarian situation there.
