The government of Mexico offered a public apology to the victims of the massacre in the municipality of Acteal, Chiapas, which occurred in December 1997. The Mexican State claimed to assume responsibility for this incident in which 45 indigenous people lost their lives after an attack by allegedly paramilitary groups.
The survivors accepted the apology and asked those allegedly responsible to be brought to justice, including the former president of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo.
