"
The Russian government must do everything possible to conduct a full and transparent investigation into this crime,
" EU representative for diplomacy Josep Borrell said in a statement on behalf of the 27 member states.
He spoke of possible sanctions: “
the EU calls for a common international response and reserves the right to take appropriate measures, including restrictive measures
”.
It “
condemns in the strongest terms the attempted assassination of Alexei Navalny, who was poisoned by a military nerve chemical agent from the 'Novichok' group, similar to that used in the assassination attempt
” against the former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in 2018 in England.
“
Impunity should not and will not be tolerated,
” added Borrell.
“
The European Union calls on the Russian Federation to cooperate fully with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in order to ensure an impartial international investigation
,” he continued.
