The Corona Cabinet meeting today (Thursday) was one of the most difficult to hold since the start of the second wave of the epidemic, according to five senior ministers and officials who attended the meeting.

According to them, two reasons caused the difficult atmosphere in the yeshiva - the great tension between the ultra-Orthodox ministers and the Corona commissioner Prof. Roni Gamzo and the feeling of many ministers that a general closure in the country is a matter of days.

At a relatively early stage in the meeting, the hostility towards Professor Gamzo, which was clearly evident in the headlines of the ultra-Orthodox newspapers, exploded.

Housing Minister Yaakov Litzman asked for permission to speak and said he was not prepared for Gamzo to take part in the ministerial team that handles the flight outline to Uman until he apologized for what Litzman defined as "defamations against Hasidim that led to an increase in anti-Semitism against them in Ukraine."

According to ministers who attended the meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded and told Litzman that there would be a meeting of the ministerial staff for artisan affairs and Gamzo would attend.

Litzman reiterated that he was not prepared for Gamzo to be involved in the issue.

Netanyahu backed Gimzo again.

"Whoever needs to be at such a meeting from the point of view of the Ministry of Health and the professionals will participate in it," Netanyahu concluded the short debate that testified to the great tension.

Another event at the yeshiva showed how much the ultra-Orthodox ministers came to it against the background of the fact that a significant part of the localities and red cities are ultra-Orthodox.

Education Minister Yoav Galant argued at the meeting that the increase in morbidity during the big holiday indicates that infections are not occurring in the education system.

Minister Zeev Elkin, who spoke a few minutes later, claimed that the data actually reinforces the claim that there are infections in the education system because two weeks ago, studies resumed in the ultra-Orthodox educational institutions.

Minister Aryeh Deri protested against Elkin's remarks and claimed that the data actually tell a different story, which indicates that most of the increase in morbidity attributed to the ultra-Orthodox is in the Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.

Gamzo: We are at war, there is a reasonable chance of closure during the holidays

Those who made the gloomiest assessments at the meeting were the outside experts.

Professor Ren Blitzer said that significant steps should be taken "right now".

He supported the proposal to close only 30 "red" cities and towns but noted that without massive enforcement a comprehensive closure should be prepared.

Dr. Yinon Ashkenazi from the Hebrew University was much sharper.

There is no reason to wait and we should go to a general closure immediately. "

Minister Yuval Steinitz, who was the sharpest of the cabinet ministers, also immediately supported a general closure. Ministers Deri and Litzman joined Steinitz, partly due to the fact that a large part of the 30" red "cities and towns are ultra-Orthodox.

Gamzo, for his part, asked the ministers to back up his plan to impose a closure on only 30 localities.

He also got that backup.

With the exception of Ministers Litzman and Deri, all Corona cabinet ministers voted in favor of the Gamzo outline.

However, the final list of localities will be decided only on Saturday on the basis of the morbidity data for the next two days and the ministers will confirm it in a telephone poll.

Netanyahu who concluded the cabinet meeting told ministers that he is not sure That this is an exceptional figure that will be balanced later. "If it continues like this and the figures continue to rise, we will have to act immediately (and impose a closure).

If there is a lull, we will have more time to act (without a comprehensive closure), "Netanyahu said.

At the end of the meeting, Netanyahu instructed to present a plan for a comprehensive closure at the cabinet meeting next Thursday. Including Rosh Hashana.
