US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo today (Thursday) announced sanctions on 11 companies from several different countries after aiding the Iranian oil industry and trade with Iran.
"Today, the United States has imposed sanctions on 11 entities for operations related to Iran's oil and petrochemical products. Iran must stop using its natural resources to spread and finance terrorism and destruction throughout the region," he tweeted on Twitter.
The companies that will be affected by the sanctions operate from Hong Kong, China, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey and according to Pompeo, sanctions will also be imposed on three senior executives in these companies.
"Our actions today are intended to re-demonstrate the United States' commitment to deprive the Iranian regime of the economic resources used to fuel terrorism and other unscrupulous actions," Pompeo told Reuters.
The main target of the latest operation is the Iranian petrochemical corporation Zagros, which according to US data has agreed to market hundreds of thousands of tons of petrochemical products to various countries this year, a much-needed oxygen pipeline for the Iranian regime now in the midst of a severe economic crisis.
