A 32-year-old woman received a botulinum toxin injection in her face, shoulders and calves on August 23. She developed double vision, general weakness and difficulty breathing the next day.

She went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Ren Chai Hospital on September 5 and was admitted the same day.

The woman has good past health and is now in stable condition. She is clinically diagnosed as suspected of iatrogenic botulism.

Botulinum toxin can spread and affect muscles other than the injection site

A spokesman for the Department of Health pointed out that the department is continuing its investigation and urged the public that botulinum toxin injections should only be prescribed and administered by registered doctors.

The department reminded that if botulinum toxin is used for cosmetic purposes, the effect will be short-lived after injection and will gradually disappear.

Because the relevant muscles of the poisoned patient are affected, and the botulinum toxin may spread, affecting other areas beyond the injection site, the patient may have drooping eyelids, double vision or blurred vision, difficulty chewing, hoarse voice, or even swallowing , Speaking or breathing.

These symptoms may appear several hours, days or weeks after the injection.
