Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed today that Moscow and Minsk agree to confront attempts to separate them and cut them off from the federal state that unites them.
During a joint press conference between him and his Belarusian counterpart, Vladimir Macki, held at the conclusion of their talks in Moscow, Lavrov said: “We condemn the pressures that the legitimate authorities of Belarus are currently subjected to by foreign countries that at the same time provide public support to the opposition,” explaining that “among these pressures was the imposition of Suspicious ideas about mediation between the authority and the opposition, including the mediation of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which itself suffers from a deep crisis and needs reform, as well as the aforementioned organization has shown its inability to secure international monitoring of the recent presidential elections in Belarus.
Commenting on the demand of some countries to cancel the results of those elections that were won by President Alexander Lukashenko and to announce the victory of the opposition, Lavrov said that “this request is provocative,” stressing that Russia and Belarus adhere to their clear position regarding the movements of those trying to destabilize the situation in Belarus, cut this republic from Russia and sabotage the foundations of its existence. Lavrov pointed out that the starting point for the two countries regarding the results of the recent Belarusian elections is the need to solve all problems on the basis of the Constitution of Belarus while respecting its laws.
