Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu postponed the discussion in the Ministerial Committee for Limited Area Affairs that was supposed to take place today (Sunday), to an unknown date.

This, shortly after his meeting with the heads of the ultra-Orthodox factions, Ministers Yaakov Litzman and Aryeh Deri, who demanded that alternatives be considered for closure of red cities in order to deal with the high level of morbidity.

The committee was supposed to approve the proposal of the corona commissioner, Prof. Roni Gamzo, to impose a closure on red localities with the highest level of morbidity, including Umm al-Fahm, Kfar Qassem, Tira, Lakia, Bnei Brak, Elad, and Beitar Illit, as well as two neighborhoods. In Beit Shemesh - Ramat Beit Shemesh A and C - and several neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, headed by Sheikh Graach.

Gamzo also proposed imposing a nightly closure on about 20 Arab and ultra-Orthodox localities from 19:00 to 05:00.

The largest cities in this category are Nazareth, Taibeh, Emanuel, as well as ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods in Tiberias.

Red localities to be restricted:

  • Umm al-Fahm

  • Kafr Qasim

  • castle

  • Lakia

  • Bnei Brak

  • Elad

  • Beitar Illit

  • Beit Shemesh - Ramat Beit Shemesh A and C Neighborhoods

  • East Jerusalem - Sheikh Graach

  • A further 20 red cities will be subject to a night curfew

The heads of the ultra-Orthodox authorities, including Beitar Illit, Bnei Brak, Elad and Emanuel, drafted a scathing letter to Netanyahu, following his handling of the corona crisis and the decision to impose a closure on the cities.

In the letter, the heads of the authorities attacked the prime minister, claiming that he was "the man who signed with his hand, time and time again, our transformation into disease spreaders and enemies of the people, with the selective punishment of tens of thousands of families, members of the ultra-Orthodox sector."

Against the background of the attack and ahead of the convening of the Ministerial Committee, Netanyahu met with Litzman and Deri.

MK Moshe Gafni (Torah Judaism), who was summoned to the meeting, was absent from it due to his health condition.

The restrictions that are expected to apply in the red cities:

  • Leaving the city will be banned

  • Traffic will be limited to a distance of 500 meters from the house and only for essential needs

  • Closing the education system

  • Closing of businesses, malls and markets

  • Closing workplaces where there is a frontal work service

  • Restriction of public transportation

Meanwhile, ultra-Orthodox mayors are examining the possibility of informing Netanyahu that if only ultra-Orthodox cities are closed, they will not cooperate, close the municipal Knesset centers and transfer all responsibility to the government. A source in the Bnei Brak municipality told Walla! NEWS that "this is an initiative that is In the early stages, but if we do not have a choice - this is what we will have to do. "

At the same time, in some cities, including Bnei Brak and Elad, they will set up huge corona checkpoints in the next two days without a doctor's referral, in an attempt to change the" red "rating. That the government is expected to impose on them.

In addition, ultra-Orthodox mayors blew up last night a meeting held in Zoom together with Maj. Gen. Roni Noma, who is in charge of the ultra-Orthodox sector at Magen Israel and the Ministry of Health staff, after claiming that this was a hearing ahead of a closure on the cities.

Bnei Brak Mayor Avraham Rubinstein protested: "Is this supposed to be a legal hearing on a closure? It is not acceptable to me. A hearing is done physically with legal representation. It is neither acceptable nor serious."

The other mayors also expressed outrage.

Mayor Elad Israel Porush told Noma that "Gamzo is playing with you and sending you for a ride on us," adding that "this is not how a hearing is held."

Other mayors, defined as red cities, who may be under closure later this week, also attended the conversation, according to a decision by the ministerial committee.

Mayors have scheduled to meet today with Noma and other officials.

The mayor of Beitar Illit, Meir Rubinstein, was also furious at the hearing with Noma about the expected decision to close.

"A closure does not prove itself. This is an abuse of tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox families. The closure only increases the morbidity and does not reduce it. The ultra-Orthodox public will be held accountable by whoever signs the closure order."
