India today (Monday) overtook Brazil in the number of people infected with the corona virus in the world, and is second only to the United States, after at least 90,082 new cases that are expected to grow.

Meanwhile, several cities have reopened the subway services that have been closed for months.

The number of new daily cases in India is the highest in the world, with a total of 4.2 million cases, compared to 6.2 million in the United States.

Experts say there are no signs that the outbreak has peaked in the second-largest country in the world.

The surge in the number of patients is occurring both in major cities like the capital New Delhi and in the Mumbai economic center as well as in rural areas where access to the health system is limited.

"It's a double burden now," Public Health Professor Rajiv Dasgupta told Reuters.

"The numbers in the urban areas are not slowing down and in the rural areas they are growing."

The number of those infected today was the third day in a row of a daily record.

However, the death toll from the virus in India is much lower than in the United States and India - 71,642 compared to 193,000 and 126,000 respectively.

India claims that the jump in the number of patients also reflects more tests, and along with high recovery rates, this is evidence that the testing, detection and treatment strategy is working and that the situation is under control in relation to the size of the country.

Corona status in India

Meanwhile, the number of metro passengers in New Delhi was sparse after the resumption of train traffic after five months, and the stations were almost completely abandoned.

On Wednesday, the bars in the Indian capital will reopen.

Subway services have also been partially renewed in the western city of Ahmedabad and elsewhere, after nearly six months.

Pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to lift the economy out of its deep stagnation is growing, after the general closure imposed in March led to business closures, left millions out of work and led to a 24% drop in GDP in the second quarter of the year.
