Ansu Fati is now the youngest player to score a goal for Spain, after he was part of the country's 4-0 victory against Ukraine in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday.

At just 17 years and 311 days old, the Barcelona forward broke the 95-year-old record set by Juan Errazquín, who scored his first international goal at 18 years and 344 days.

Fati made history by scoring the third goal for his team, which finished off a sensational performance by the youngster who began by scoring a penalty in the opening minutes.

"Although I know him [Fati] well and I know what he is capable of, I cannot say that I am not surprised," Spanish coach Luis Enrique told reporters after the game.

Coach Luis Enrique gives instructions to Ansu Fati during the UEFA Nations League match.

“He showed so much courage and daring in doing what he did in the second minute, defeating a player so naturally.

I can't remember ever doing something like this before, ”he added.

The new Messi?

Despite defender Sergio Ramos scoring two goals during the match, Fati was the featured player.

The forward - who is now also Barcelona's youngest scorer in La Liga and the youngest player to score in the Champions League - was a constant thorn in Ukraine's side with his straight runs and deception.

Now there will be questions about whether the youngster can replace legend Lionel Messi at the club level.

What future does it hold for Messi at FC Barcelona?

The Argentine had wanted to leave Barcelona this year, but agreed to stay with some reluctance.

Despite this, Fati will have a chance to prevail next season, as the club looks to renew the first team and focus on the future.

"At this age it is easy for all the accolades to go to your head, but he is mature enough to know that the path he is taking at the moment is the one he needs to follow to develop as a player," added Enrique.

"He's humble, he's calm, and I'm sure it won't affect him."
