Around three and a half years after a terrorist attack on the Reina nightclub in Istanbul, an assassin has been sentenced to 40 life imprisonment.
The court found the man guilty of deliberately killing 39 people.
In addition, he was sentenced to an additional 1,368 years in prison for attempted murder of 79 people, the state news agency Anadolu announced on Monday evening.
The Uzbek assassin stormed a club on New Year's Eve 2016/2017 and shot 39 people.
At least 79 people were injured.
The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed the attack for itself.
The attack on "Reina" was the first in Turkey to be directly claimed by IS.
The man had initially made a confession, but withdrew it in February 2019.
According to Anadolu, a total of 60 defendants stood before the court.
The nightclub was partially demolished in May 2017 by order of the Istanbul City Council for violating urban planning regulations.
