Torra seeks to prolong the political blockade after his disqualification

2020-09-07T12:37:36.594Z

Puigdemont asked the 'president' to postpone the call for elections so that Junts per Catalunya reinforces its electoral profile and cuts ERC's advantage

Esquerra held a meeting of its leadership last week in which some voices proposed breaking the Government agreement with Junts per Catalunya.

The Republicans in favor of the break were in the minority but expressed their weariness over a relationship that has become untenable and that in practice has meant the existence of two Executives in Catalonia: JuntsxCat and ERC.

And it is that the will expressed by Quim Torra that a successor is not chosen once he has been disqualified by the Supreme Court - the hearing will be held on the 17th - is an attempt to prolong the political blockade proposed by the supporters of Carles Puigdemont to reinforce their electoral profile, carry the elections at the beginning of next year and cut the advantage that the polls give to the Republicans in the next Catalan elections.

Torra had repeatedly expressed his will to call elections before being disqualified by the Supreme Court.

According to some sources, during the visit that Torra and Puigdemont made on August 22 to the tomb of Antonio Machado in Collioure, France, the

former president

conveyed to his successor the need to immolate his desire to call the Catalans to the polls in the altar of JuntsxCat strategy.

Torra accepted.

In return, he will have the homage of street demonstrations for his rebellion and disqualification, post-convergent sources say.

The new board leaves Esquerra in a complex situation before the pro-independence public.

If Vice President Pere Aragonés (ERC) takes over from Torra as acting president, he will be singled out as a "usurper" and collaborator with the "repression" by the hyperventilated sovereignists.

Torra's statements that he does not want a successor to be elected could raise the unusual situation that the

disqualified

president

can continue to attend the meetings, but that it was Aragonese who appeared on the official letterhead.

Esquerra wants a solution agreed with his partners - as the vice president himself expressed last Saturday - and refuses the confrontation.

In fact, there will not even be a reply to JuntsxCat in the act in which the work of Oriol Junqueras and Marta Rovira

Tornarem a vèncer (I com ho farem) will

be presented tomorrow

(We will win again. And how we will do it).

And this despite the fact that already in mid-August the Puigdemontista MEP Toni Comín spoke of a “cold war” between ERC and JuntsxCat.

"They [JuntsxCat] are not fighting for independence but for the presidency," say Republican sources.

In practice there are already two governments.

And that idea has been reinforced with the latest changes made by Torra.

If Aragonés relieves Torra as acting president, he will be identified as a “usurper” and collaborator with the “repression” by the hyperventilated sovereignists.

The three dismissals in the Torra Executive hide two revenges and political impotence, government sources point out: against Miquel Buch for the action of the Mossos in the independence demonstrations;

against the Minister of Business, Àngels Chacón, for not breaking the PDeCAT card.

The third case, that of the until now responsible for Culture, Mariàngela Vilallonga, is part of the mismatches between Torra and Puigdemont: the first wanted to place Laura Borràs, a deputy investigated for, presumably, awarding contracts by hand.

But the former president from Brussels vetoed it, post-convergent sources say, questioning the integrity of her loyalty to the top leader.

The operation blocked the way for Borràs to return to Catalan politics and prevented his case from passing from the Supreme Court to the Superior of Justice of Catalonia, slowing down time.

This without losing sight of the main thing: the distancing between the partners of the Government.

The president of the Parliament, the republican Roger Torrent, was not present at the inauguration of the new positions.

The representation of the Chamber was held by the enthusiastic Puigdemontista Josep Costa, first vice-president of the Parliament.

Hours before, the incontinent Ramon Tremosa did not even wait to be appointed a company director to criticize the Aragonese vice president for preferring to agree on the Mede funds (European Stability Mechanism) with Pedro Sánchez rather than with Torra.

Paradoxically, in this troubled river in sovereignty, the Government of Pedro Sánchez can get dividends.

The marking that Tremosa dedicates to Aragonés is a record requested from Waterloo, an application of the doctrine of the "cold war" enunciated by Comín and fed by Puigdemont himself, who last Saturday already sent a message to Esquerra and his defense from Brussels from the dialogue table with the central government: "You cannot negotiate with an oppressive state, which must be defeated."

Paradoxically, in this troubled river in sovereignty, the Government of Pedro Sánchez can get dividends.

While ERC continues to try to find its image in the mirror of Puigdemont's independence purity, the PDeCAT deputies - four, half of the JuntsxCat group - in Congress could change their frontal opposition and give the green light to the state budgets in exchange counterparts, something that already happens with pragmatic Basque nationalists.

This could mean, in the medium term, its approach to the positions of the Nationalist Party of Catalonia, led by Marta Pascal, and who knows if an electoral convergence in the future.

The convergent universe would not be complete without stating what Artur Mas will do.

Some say that he is still in the game so as not to leave loose ends of the case of the 3% that threatens to splash him.

Once this is over, he has no shortage of offers: the one he has in his portfolio is to star in a documentary about crossing the Atlantic by sailing for four months.

Of course, if the corporals do not give war.
