NEWS

Hundreds of thousands of Israelis, residents of the 40 red localities, have been placed under a night curfew starting this evening (Tuesday) that will last about a week.

In these localities, the education system will be closed, except for special education, and the gathering will be limited to 20 men and women in an open space, and only 10 in a closed space.

The closure began tonight and will last every night for a week, from 7pm to 5pm.

During the night curfew, all commercial activities reside in these localities, except for essential businesses that will remain open.

Residents will also be allowed to stay only up to 500 meters from their homes, except in cases of food supply and medical needs.

However, the curfew was not immediately felt in any restricted area.

In the Issawiya neighborhood in East Jerusalem, residents said they only heard about the restrictions in the media, while others did not know about the move at all.

Sari, a 25-year-old from Issawiya who works in Beitar Illit, said not all residents were updated on the matter.

He said he would be able to continue traveling to work as usual.

"Everyone is scared, but there is nothing to do," he said.

"Restricting traffic to some of the time is the right step to prevent the spread of the corona," said one neighborhood resident, "We heard on the news that it should close at 7pm and schooling has already stopped."

Meanwhile in Netivot, residents were angry about the move, which they said should have been applied to the entire country.

"The problem is national and not local," said Dror Mazuz, a resident of the city.

"A government decision on the closure in Netivot is not enough to eradicate the disease. A closure should be done all over the country, not in specific cities and neighborhoods. Starting at 5:00 in the morning, since I go to prayer, I encounter many city residents who abide by the rules. Weddings and parties, and like the demonstrations. "

In Elad, where they have been fighting in recent days to prevent a total closure of the city, they called for cooperation with the Home Front Command and the police.

"We will do it together with determination with the police and the Home Front Command, we will know how to do it in a wonderful way," said the mayor of Elad, Israel Porush.

"We have reached a state of red settlement because of the contempt."

The restrictions that apply in the red cities

  • Night curfew from 05:00 to 19:00

  • Traffic limit of up to 500 meters from the house during the curfew

  • Disabling trading during the curfew, except for essential businesses

  • Closure of educational institutions, except for special education

  • Prohibition of gatherings of more than 20 people in an open space, and 10 in a closed space

Red cities threaten to oppose closure: "Ineffective move"

In Puridis, a police presence was felt tonight at the three entrances to the village.

At the beginning of the evening, the police mostly talked to the residents, but did not prevent them from leaving the city during the first half hour of the curfew, to allow those who had not heard of it to return to their homes.

In general, at many checkpoints in the area, the emphasis is on advocacy, not enforcement.

Most of the shops in the village are closed, but not all.

The food shops and restaurants in the center of the village that operate deliveries have remained open.

"Unfortunately we came to this situation of a red settlement because of the contempt, mainly because of the contempt for weddings, which in most cases the police did not disperse.

"So now the closure is necessary and there is no other choice but to do it to stop the plague, otherwise we will all fall ill," he added.

At the same time, a kilometer-long traffic jam was recorded in Wadi Ara, on Road 65 heading east, from the Iron Interchange toward Umm al-Fahm, another city where a night curfew was imposed.

The farce in Tiberias continues

Meanwhile, the confusion in Tiberias, which has not been declared a restricted area, continues.

On Tuesday night the municipality announced that the city is no longer red but orange, and yesterday morning the schools opened.

The municipality explained that the directive was received from the staff of the corona commissioner, Prof. Roni Gamzo.

However, on the Home Front Command website, which is the official website where the public receives instructions regarding the conduct of the Corona crisis, Tiberias was still defined as a red settlement at the time - which necessitates the closure of the city's education system.

However, last night the municipality insisted that the classification was changed to orange, so they also opened the schools today, according to the approval they received.

It was further claimed that Tiberias is still on the list of red authorities only because it has not yet been updated.

However, tonight the municipality admits that it is still defined as red, and therefore, the education system will not open in it tomorrow.

"Although we are happy that no closure / restricted area will be imposed in the city, we take seriously the Ministry of Health's publication regarding leaving the city of Tiberias in the category of red cities and closing the municipal education system," the municipality said this evening.

"It is not possible that on Sunday evening the Ministry of Health instructs the authority to act as an orange city and now defines it as a red city in which no studies are held," they added. "It is not possible that in a city where there is no restricted area, the education system will be closed while cities with restricted areas will operate the educational institutions in parts that are not under closure and will be considered non-red cities. This decision is unreasonable, disproportionate and unacceptable." The municipality also claimed that the morbidity data in the city are improving.
