The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, and the Minister for Citizenship, Marlène Schiappa, want to formally ban virginity certificates and penalize those who issue them.
This document written by a doctor is supposed to prove a woman's virginity after a medical examination of the vagina to see if the hymen has been torn or not.
In 2018, the WHO called for the prohibition of these "virginity tests", which constitute a
"violation of the fundamental rights of women and girls",
and indicated that they did not also allow to prove
"that a girl or woman has had vaginal intercourse or not ”
.
