Shootings, road blockades, burning cars - the violence of rival gangs has escalated in Sweden over the past few weeks. The state police chief finds the development "extremely worrying" and fears "that it will get worse before the situation improves".
The country was particularly
upset by the
death of a girl in
early August: twelve-year-old Adriana was walking her dog and was standing with friends in front of a McDonald's in Botkyrka, south of Stockholm, when shots were fired from a passing car.
So far, the perpetrators and their motives are unknown, the police suspect that the bullets did not target Adriana and her friends.
Stockholm University criminologist Amir Rostami has been involved in gang and organized crime for many years. He started his career in 2002 with the police. He came to criminology, he says, "because while tracking gangs I saw everything that didn't work." That's why he wanted to know what other countries might do better.
