According to the software giant Microsoft, hackers from Russia are once again active in the current US presidential election campaign - but also from China and Iran.

A Russian hacker group attacked American consulting firms that work for both the Democrats and the Republicans, Microsoft reported.

It is the same group called "Strontium" that captured emails from the Democratic Party during the 2016 election campaign.

The emails were published shortly before the election and had harmed Hillary Clinton, who is now President Donald Trump's rival candidate.

A Chinese hacker group tried unsuccessfully this year to attack e-mail accounts in the vicinity of the election campaign team of the Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, said Microsoft.

A group by the name of “Zirconium” has also targeted at least one “prominent person” with a previous connection to Trump's White House, it said.

Between March and September there were "thousands" of attacks by these hackers - almost 150 of which were successful.

Hackers from Iran tried, among other things, unsuccessfully to break into accounts of Trump administration officials and people from his campaign team.

The US secret services had already announced in early August that Russia, China and Iran were interfering in the current election campaign.

Russia is trying to weaken Biden, while China and Iran wanted to prevent Trump from being re-elected, it said.
