The countries of the European Union have affirmed their readiness to impose sanctions on the Turkish regime unless it retracts from its unilateral moves and provocations in the eastern Mediterranean.
In a final statement issued after the summit held today on the French island of Corsica, the seven European member states of the "MED 7" group indicated that more punitive measures against Turkey could be discussed in the European Council on September 24-25, confirming the support of southern countries. Europe's seven complete solidarity with Cyprus and Greece "in the face of repeated encroachments on their sovereignty and sovereign rights and escalatory actions by Turkey."
For his part, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said in a speech during the summit: "If Turkey wants an open dialogue with Greece, it must stop its unilateral actions and respect international law completely and not partially."
Earlier today, the Greek Prime Minister called on the European Union to impose effective sanctions on the Turkish regime to stop its provocative moves in the Mediterranean region, stressing the rejection of dialogue with this regime under threat.
The Turkish regime continues its provocative steps in the eastern Mediterranean, where it revealed, on a map it published, its ambitions to explore for gas in areas off the coast of Greek islands, and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades a few days ago warned that his island was facing a “very dangerous situation” due to “provocations and violations” of the Turkish regime Of international law and “breaching the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus”.
