Hundreds of homes were burned to the ground in Oregon in the United States, in huge fires that are raging in the northwestern state, the state governor, Kate Brown, announced tonight (Thursday).

The governor warned that the fire, which broke out in about 35 hotspots and caused damage to at least five towns, could lead to damage to human life and property on a historic scale in the country.

"This could be the biggest loss of human and property life due to a field of thorns burning in the history of our country," Brown said at a news conference.

Alongside neighboring California and Washington, Oregon has been battling the blaze since the weekend, following unprecedented heat waves accompanied by strong winds and dryness.

"I want to be direct and say - we expect to see a great loss, both in buildings and in human life," the governor said.

The towns and cities of Detroit, Blue River, Vida, Phoenix and Talent have been "substantially destroyed," local reports said.

"Hundreds of homes have been demolished. And we continue to carry out mass evacuations across the entire state," Brown added.

Weather conditions in Oregon did not improve last night, and new fires broke out threatening more cities.

The dry vegetation in the country has increased the risk of further spread of the fire, with the country suffering in the last 24 hours from "significant damage and devastating consequences".

Brown said she was legally active in firefighting and emergency services across the country, giving immediate powers and resources to firefighters and seeking federal assistance.

In neighboring California, about 2.5 million acres have already been burned - an annual record - and at least eight people have been killed.
