Guillaume Martin, fallen but never sunk

While the Normand has, as the day after the rest day, fell again yesterday, fortunately without seriousness, he points two seconds in front of his compatriot Romain Bardet and, publicly for his part, has high ambitions.

The hilly profile of the stage should not complicate his life too much, but be careful to hang on in the last two difficulties where he could deplore the absence of teammates from his Cofidis team.

🎙🇫🇷 @GuilmMartin "When you're on the podium after 12 days of racing you're really motivated. There's a bit of fatigue but I'm in it. Today there are a some really steep sections in the final so we ' ll see how it goes. "# TDF2020 pic.twitter.com/PIWzgqPjyh

Romain Bardet, like at home

4th overall, Romain Bardet has almost unsuspected ambitions at the start of the Tour de France.

30 seconds behind Primoz Roglic, the Auvergnat knows that everything is still playable when it comes to a day that passes through his home.

At the time of climbing climbs which no longer hold any secrets for him, his fine strategist side could work in his favor.

In any case, it promises "a very nice final."

🎙🇫🇷 @romainbardet "I'm really happy that the Tour is here. Every cyclist wants to do a home stage. If you know what's coming up on the stage, it'll be to your advantage. It'll be a really competitive final "# TDF2020 pic.twitter.com/rzIjBgexIl

Profile of the stage: the hardest of the year?

The 4,400 meters of elevation gain suggest that a complicated day awaits the 160 remaining riders at the start of this 13th stage.

On the menu, 191.5 kilometers from Châtel-Guyon to the top of Puy Mary (category 1), undoubtedly the scene of a great final struggle.

In the meantime, the peloton will have to pass the six other listed difficulties of the day including the Col de Ceyssat (cat. 1) from kilometer 25 as well as two category 2 climbs and three category 3 climbs.

The five reasons for taking step 13

For the difference in height

4400 m on the menu.

The stage that offers the most gradient this year.

A succession that makes one think of “a toboggan”, as summarized by Thierry Gouvenou, the sporting director of the event.

With a dreaded epilogue, the final climb in the Pas de Peyrol (1589 m; 5.4 km at 8.1%) in which the last two kilometers show percentages between 11 and 12%.

For backpackers

They are expected every day.

They don't have a lot of space to shine.

The Belgian Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), used to long breakaways on rugged profiles (winner at Saint-Etienne last year) could find a favorable field of expression.

For the Roglic-Bernal match

The Slovenian holds the reins of the race, escorted by a strong and united team.

The Colombian is, like last year in ambush, carried by a form which is going crescendo.

A duel to follow.

Primoz Roglic, who keeps the yellow jersey, sums up before the 13th stage ending this Friday at the top of Puy Mary: “There can be a good fight at the end.

For us it remains the same, staying focused on our work but a lot can happen. ”

For the outsider Tadej Pogacar

The difficulties, and in particular the last one should not widen considerable gaps but each time the opportunity is offered to him, Tadej Pogacar (7th in the general classification at 44 '' from his compatriot Primoz Roglic) takes pleasure in recalling that 'he is not afraid of anything or anyone.

Winner at Laruns (9th stage), he can spread his wings at the height of the slope.

For Romain Bardet

The leader of the AG2R-la Mondiale team (4th in the general classification, 30 '' behind Primoz Roglic) is living a calm race where his sense of placement, his condition and his experience are marvelous.

The Auvergnat, on courses of which he knows the difficulties, could come to light.

Guillaume Martin (3rd in the general classification) will have to try to keep in touch with the best, whatever the scenario.
