The LNR takes World Rugby to European justice

2020-09-11T20:44:04.762Z

The National Rugby League is attacking the international bodies head-on about the release of internationals.

The National Rugby League, supported by its English counterpart, has filed a complaint with the European Commission against World Rugby,

from a source close to the matter, confirming information from the

.

The details of the complaint are confidential and have not been forwarded to either the FFR or World Rugby, this source explained, so that the governing body of world rugby has to respond to the European Commission first.

In question, rule 9 of World Rugby, which governs the release of internationals.

Alleged abuse of competition law by World Rugby.

It is not its very principle but the modalities that pose a problem: it is the clubs, and not the Federations, who pay the players and they feel aggrieved to find themselves deprived of their best elements for many league matches.

The scrum-half Antoine Dupont, star of the XV of France and Toulouse, thus spent, last season, only 52 minutes on the lawns of the Top 14 between the World Cup-2019 in Japan, a back injury and the Tournament of the six nations 2020. The document, presented in Brussels this week, comprises several hundred pages and details the alleged abuses of competition law by World Rugby.

This lawsuit coincides with the announcement on Thursday of the international autumn calendar by the European federations of the Six Nations Tournament, which created a “Nations Cup” between November 13 and December 6, with the Fiji and Georgia as guest nations.

The XV of France will also play two matches, a preparation against Wales on October 24 and the late 2020 Six Nations Tournament match against Ireland the following week.

That's six matches in total, one more than the Top 14 clubs offered, double what the international fall window initially predicted.

Other actions in progress

At the end of July, the French League had given notice to World Rugby, accusing it of having modified the international calendar "without any real consultation with the professional leagues".

The LNR had taken a new step last week, once again summoning the governing body of world rugby to French justice.

This new complaint does not call into question the actions already taken.

A meeting between the president of the Top 14 clubs and the LNR is also scheduled for Wednesday September 16 regarding the international calendar.
