Twelve Hong Kong people who absconded at the end of last month were intercepted by the mainland maritime police and detained at the Shenzhen Yantian District Detention Center.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement on September 11 referring to the incident, saying that the United States is deeply concerned about the detention of 12 Hong Kong democratic social activists in Guangdong Province.
Pompeo said that the arrested Hong Kong people were denied access to lawyers, and the authorities did not provide information about the welfare of the arrested persons, nor did they disclose the charges against them.
Pompeo said that the United States questioned the Hong Kong leadership’s commitment to protecting citizens’ rights and urged the authorities to ensure that those arrested are treated by due process.
The statement mentioned that 12 Hong Kong residents were arrested off the coast of Hong Kong about two weeks ago.
