Israel and Bahrain had secret relations that lasted for more than two decades, but the final phase that led to the joint announcement of the establishment of full diplomatic relations lasted only 29 days.

Sources involved in the contacts tonight (Friday) reveal the full details of what happened behind the scenes and led to the historic agreement.

On August 13, a few hours after the announcement of the normalization agreement between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, a very senior official in the Bahrain government called President Trump's senior adviser Jared Kushner and White House envoy Avi Berkowitz.

A source close to the contents of the conversation said that the Bahraini senior's message was direct.

"We want to be the next Arab state to normalize relations with Israel," the senior official told Trump advisers.

From that moment on, marathon contacts began between the Americans and the Bahraini and Israel.

Along with Kushner and Berkowitz on the U.S. team that led the talks with the Bahraini and with Israel were National Security Adviser Robert O'Brien, Iranian envoy Brian Hawke, head of the Middle East at the White House, General Miguel Korea, United States Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and White House official Adam Bowler.

Kushner, Berkowitz and their staff conducted talks with Bahrain's heir, Prince Salman bin Hemed, one of his top advisers and Bahrain's ambassador to the United States.

Leading the talks on the Israeli side were Israeli Ambassador to Washington Ron Drummer and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally.

One of the lessons learned in the White House after the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates concerned domestic politics in Israel.

A source close to the matter said that when Kushner and Berkowitz visited Israel last Sunday, they met with Defense Minister Bnei Gantz and Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi and updated them on the breakthrough in contacts with Bahrain.

The two have also been updated in recent days on the upcoming announcement.

Last week, after visiting Israel and the United Arab Emirates, Kushner, Berkowitz and their team members continued to Manama, the capital of Bahrain.

Prior to his visit to Bahrain, Kushner of Stam in the United States ordered a Torah scroll and paid for it with his own money. Carries the Torah scroll by his hands.

Waiting for the "green light"

In a meeting with the king and in another meeting with the regent there was great progress.

Kushner and Berkowitz thought it would be possible to reach an agreement already, so they finally decided to continue talks for a few more days to finally summarize all the details.

In addition, it was necessary to complete the contacts with Saudi Arabia as well and make sure that the Saudis "give the green light" to the Bahraini movement.

In the past week, contacts have continued between Kushner and Berkowitz and the Bahraini regent and his men, and at the same time with the Israeli ambassador Drummer.

A source involved in talks between the Americans and Bahraini said that it was very important for the White House to close the agreement between Bahrain and Israel even before the White House signing ceremony on September 15.

The thought in the White House was that if two Arab states showed up at the message ceremony to the world and the region it would be much more resonant.

"The UAE broke the ice and were the leaders but the Bahraini also deserve a lot of credit because they hosted the conference earlier in which the economic part of the Trump program was presented and have greatly helped the Trump administration on many issues over the past three years," a senior U.S. official said.

The phone call between Trump Netanyahu and the King of Bahrain was warm and friendly.

A senior US official said the three agreed that as part of the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries would open embassies and replace ambassadors, start direct flights between Manama and Tel Aviv, and cooperate in health, business, technology, education, security and agriculture.
