The Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil, Celso de Mello, ordered this Friday that President Jair Bolsonaro appear to testify in person and not in writing in the framework of the investigation for alleged interference in the Federal Police, denounced by the now former Minister of Justice Sergio Moro.
Bolsonaro has not yet commented on this request, although he has previously denied having tried to interfere in police investigations.
In a statement, the Court reported that De Mello's decision is based on a rule that establishes that the holders of the three powers of the State may only appear in writing when as witnesses or victims, but not when they are investigated or charged.
Moro resigned in April after the president published in the Official Gazette of the Union (the state gazette) the dismissal of the head of the Federal Police without first announcing the minister.
Moro argued that Bolsonaro was interfering in the work of the police, despite the fact that he had received guarantees that the body would have full autonomy in its work.
