Christmas tree producers denounce the words of the mayor of Bordeaux

Pierre Hurmic, he defends himself and denounces "a media buzz". "The power of conservatives and reactionaries, in this city as elsewhere, is staggering", he criticized.

Mocked and criticized, including within his own camp, the words of the mayor of Bordeaux on Christmas trees were not to everyone's taste and aroused the ire of the producers of the famous tree.

Friday evening September 11, the French Association of the natural Christmas tree published a press release in which it is indignant at statements under a "

dogmatic vision, without any foundation, which clearly aims to deny a family tradition appreciated and widely followed.

The controversy started with an intervention by the mayor (EELV) of Bordeaux, Pierre Hurmic, on Thursday.

During his back-to-school press conference, the city councilor announced the removal of Christmas trees from town squares, describing them as "

dead Christmas trees

".

"

We will not put dead trees in town squares

," he said, adding that this was "

not at all [his] conception of revegetation

."

In addition, Bordeaux wants to adopt, by the end of the year, a "

tree rights charter

".

"

Lack of knowledge of the agricultural world

"

Bringing together 130 members, the French Association of the natural Christmas tree sanctions remarks which allow the mayor to "

afford cheap media coverage, while casting shame on an entire profession and undermining our production and our jobs

”.

Pierre Hurmic expresses himself without "

any scientific

backing

", by "

excessive remarks

" adds the organization, which criticizes his "

real ignorance of the agricultural world

".

The association expresses its "

strong dissatisfaction

" and denounces a "very

bad trial made to the Christmas tree

".

The trees cultivated by its members are produced "

in the strictest respect for the standards and regulations in force

", she recalls, and they have no link with deforestation: "

the Christmas tree is not a wild fir uprooted in the forest, but a cultivated plant

”.

In addition, a tree is planted in the forest for each tree "

proposed for the Christmas holidays

".

On Facebook, the organization insists that "

there is no deforestation of forests

" to produce the trees.

I pity our fellow Bordeaux winegrowers, from now on to preserve the oaks, the wooden barrel will be prohibited.

Would that be stupid?

Yes of course, yet it's the same logic,

”she wrote.

Finally, the organization defends the cultural status of the Christmas tree: “

symbol of the end of year celebrations

”, the tree is “

the pleasure of the children who decorate it and the families who gather around it every year

”.

It also represents an “

intergenerational social bond that is particularly essential in these difficult times

”.

"

The French favor natural fir

", she recalls in conclusion.

Established in 1998 to unite producers of Christmas trees and promote the natural tree, the French Association of the natural Christmas tree aims to defend the production of Christmas trees and to promote its culture.

Media buzz

"

Asked about Europe 1, Saturday, the mayor denounced a "

media buzz

" without interest.

I held a press conference in which I announced 30 measures by the end of the year.

30 concrete, precise measures, with implementation dates on the ground [...] Everything went very well, no journalist present considered that a proposal could cause controversy

”.

Now, “

this story is creating a buzz, I still have a hard time understanding why.

It's media buzz, tomorrow we will talk about something else,

”he said.

Last year, he justified himself, the tree in the Place Pey-Berland, in front of the town hall, was 17 meters and had "

fallen, during the storm Fabien, damaging the place

".

The financial argument has also been put forward: the tree installed until now in front of the town hall “

cost a small fortune, it was guarded day and night, because it was vandalized.

It was expensive and this budget will be reallocated for the benefit of new events for the people of Bordeaux

"in order to"

respect the magic of Christmas

", he explained.

This year, the town hall therefore intends to "

favor living trees, [which it will] decorate

".

In other words, there will be “

several trees

” in the square, but no fir.

The elected ecologist also attacked his opponents. “

We have totally uneducated people: the tree is not a Christian symbol of Christmas! We have the right to modify a certain number of traditions ... The power of the conservatives and reactionaries, in this city as elsewhere, is staggering,

”he was carried away. His decision represents only a "

change at the margin. It's peanuts,

"said Pierre Hurmic, calling for"

to quickly move on to subjects a little more serious than the removal of a dead tree in a square in Bordeaux on the occasion of the Christmas holidays

".
