After the coup in Mali, the military junta promised to install a transitional government for 18 months until an election is to be held.

This is the result of three days of talks between the military, politicians and representatives of civil society, said the leader of the military junta, Assimi Goita, in the capital Bamako.

Malian army soldiers occupied a military base near Bamako on August 18 and captured President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.

After his arrest and under pressure from the military, he announced his immediate resignation and the dissolution of parliament.

Originally, the junta had called for a two-year transition period.

West African leaders, however, had spoken out in favor of a swift return to a civilian government.

The aim of the "Charter" that has now been agreed is a "new, democratic, secular" Mali, said military junta leader Goita.

He hoped that the international community would benevolently accompany this process.

Opposition wants role in transition to civil government

The spokesman for the negotiations, Moussa Camara, told the Reuters news agency that the interim president could be a civilian or a soldier under the "charter".

He is elected by electors who determine the military junta.

Before the coup, the opposition movement on June 5th demanded the resignation of President Keita and repeatedly organized mass protests against him.

The movement now asked the junta to give it a role in moving to civilian government.

How this should look exactly was initially unclear on Saturday.

Ex-President Keita had been under pressure for some time because, among other things, he had failed to bring the attacks by Islamists, which had been ongoing since 2012, under control, especially in the north of the country.
