The French are mostly in favor of reinstating the death penalty and are calling for "
a real leader to restore order
", according to an Ipsos / Sopra Steria study published on Monday.
Some 55% of French people (+11 points in 2019), a record, thus affirm that “
the death penalty should be reinstated in France
”, according to this study carried out for the 8th consecutive year for the daily
Le Monde
, the Jean Foundation. Jaurès, and the Institut Montaigne.

But the subject remains "
very divisive politically
", according to the study, since only supporters RN (85%) and LR (71%, +23 points) mostly agree with this statement, approved by a minority (39%) in the other parties.
We note a very strong increase (+31 points over one year) of supporters of the death penalty at LFI + PCF.
"A real chef"
Workers (68%), employees (60%) and retirees (55%) mostly agree with this statement, against 41% of managers and 40% of intermediate professions.
Around 82% of French people also believe that "
we need a real chef in France to restore order
", ie 3 points more than last year.
However, the French were more numerous in previous years to express this wish, with the exception of 2019 (79%).
This statement is acclaimed by supporters of the Republicans and the National Rally (97% each, +9 points at LR) but also by those of La France Insoumise and the Communist Party (80%, +33 points).
Some 71% of EELV sympathizers (+ 6 points), 69% of those of the Socialist Party and 67% of those of En Marche also support this demand.
Manual workers (88%), retirees (86%) and employees (85%) agree more with this statement than intermediate professions (79%) and managers (67%).

The French are also 88% (+5 points in 2019), a record, to consider that "
authority is a value which is too often criticized today
".
This statement is acclaimed by supporters LR (96%), LREM (95%) and RN (90%) but also by those of the PS (81%), the Greens (79%) and LFI + PCF (75%, + 27 points).
All categories, retirees in the lead (91%), agree with this statement.
