The attorney general of the US state of South Dakota, Jason Ravnsborg, was apparently involved in an accident on Sunday night in which a pedestrian was fatally injured.

This was announced by Governor Kristi Noem, as US media reported unanimously.

The authorities are now investigating the case.

Ravnsborg evidently thought it was a deer

Apparently Ravnsborg hit his victim in a car, but mistakenly thought it was a deer, as the Department of Public Safety announced.

The Justice Minister's office said that immediately after the accident, Ravnsborg had dialed 911 to report the collision.

The body of the victim was only found the next day.

It is about 55-year-old Joseph Boever.

Ravnsborg issued a statement in which he said he was "shocked and remorseful" but could not provide details.

His office said that Ravnsborg had not had any alcohol before the accident.
