The Likud Center last night (Sunday) rejected the proposal to change the Likud constitution and change the way the world Likud chairman is elected. The proposal, which was promoted by Likud Center chairman Haim Katz and coalition chairman MK Miki Zohar - with the support of the prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu - won a majority of about 60% of the center's members who came to vote today, but less than the required two-thirds majority of voters for changes to the Likud constitution.

The proposal was intended to change the balance of power between the Israeli and international deputies who elect the chairman of the Likud Center, and to strengthen the status of the center and chairman of the movement in Israel across global Likud institutions and branches abroad. At the same time, it aimed to weaken the Likud chairman. The current global, Yaakov Hagoel, who is running for the position once again against Zohar.

In doing so, Hagoel was able to recruit about 40% of the center's members who came to vote, and to stop the change in the balance of power.

Now, the parties are expected to proceed with the convening of the World Likud Conference in order to elect a chairman, according to the current relationship between the Israeli and international delegates.
