Alexei Navalny plans to return to Russia after he recovers, a senior German official told the New York Times last night (Tuesday).

The Russian opposition leader, who is hospitalized in Berlin, spoke with a local prosecutor, after being taken out of a coma and disconnected from the soul machine.

The security source, who was briefed on the situation of the Russian opposition leader, said anonymously that he seemed sharp and aware of his situation and what had happened.

Hours earlier, the German government had announced that laboratories in France and Sweden had confirmed the findings that Novichuk's nerve gas remains in the blood of villains, in accordance with its own findings.

She reiterated her demand from the Russian government to provide explanations.

Navalny is still hospitalized at Scratch Hospital under heavy security, and according to the security source, "he refuses to cooperate with the Russian request for a joint investigation with Germany. He has no plans to go into exile in Germany."

The source added that "he wants to return to Russia and continue his mission."

German sources stressed that in addition to the presence of nerve gas residues in Navalny's blood, these were also located on a water bottle he was carrying on a flight from Russia to Germany.

They rejected Russia's demand to provide "proof" that he was poisoned on Russian soil, noting that Russian authorities took their samples and confiscated dozens of items before he was transferred to Berlin.

"They have their own evidence," one source said.

Russia continues to insist that there is no evidence of Navalny's poisoning, and instead has suggested some alternative theories, such as an overdose or a lack of blood sugar.

A German government spokesman said the use of Nowychuk, in which former British spy Sergei Scripps was attacked two years ago, was a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention - signed by Moscow.

Despite the findings, Germany has not yet decided how to respond and it and its allies in the EU and the United States have only threatened to impose sanctions.

There are voices in Germany calling for the cancellation of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, but Chancellor Angela Merkel is reluctant to do so.

Navalny, one of a long line of Kremlin opponents who has been assassinated or survived an assassination attempt in recent years, collapsed during a campaign for Siberia's local elections on August 20.

Two days later he was referred to medical care in Germany, where doctors saved his life.

Some of Navalny's associates and supporters have made significant gains in the local elections, but the ruling party backed by President Vladimir Putin has more or less retained its power.

Navalny, who is expected to fully recover, expressed satisfaction with the results.

She has not spoken to Putin since the poisoning.

According to the New York Times, in testimony to the strained relationship between Merkel and Putin, the chancellor, who used to talk to him at least once a week, has not spoken to him since the poisoning of Navalny.

Last year, Gola Chechny was assassinated in a Berlin park, in what investigators say was an assassination order for Russia.

Moscow, as usual, denied.

Yesterday, Moscow announced the cancellation of Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's planned meeting with his German counterpart, but without mentioning Navalny.

The Foreign Ministry said that the cancellation of the meeting was due to a conflict in the schedules.

Merkel has led a firm line against Russia, one of the toughest in Europe, since the annexation of the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in 2014.

German sources insist that the fact that Navalny was not attacked on German soil and in light of the improvement in his health, the picture is now different.

Germany is expected to form a unified European response.

"We want it to be a European sanctions regime, to see that it touches our values when an opposition politician is poisoned," said a senior German security official involved in the talks.

He noted that despite the need to send a message to Russia, this should not come at the expense of negotiating issues like the wars in Ukraine and Syria.

"This is a terrible thing. We must punish it, but it will not lead to a completely new policy towards Russia. The harsh reality is: we need Russia in Ukraine, in Libya, in Syria. We do not want everything to collapse."
