According to Duden, the word "Mohr" is seen as discriminatory.
In order to avoid the accusation of racism, the Unterföhring municipality has now made an important decision.
Weeks ago in Unterföhring a discussion about the depiction of the Freising Mohr in the municipal coat of arms flared up.
Against this background, the municipality decided to rename the culture prize and delete the term "Mohr".
The marble bust remains unchanged for the time being.
Unterföhring
- The term
"Mohr"
has been removed from the
Unterföhring Culture Prize
.
But the black
marble bust
is still awarded.
Lars Redlich receives it on October 3rd.
The
musical star
will be the tenth artist to
receive
the
audience award
.
Is the
"Mohr"
still up to date?
That was the question in July local politicians and citizens everywhere where a black portrait
adorns
a
municipal
coat of arms.
Uncertainty also spread in Unterföhring when, with the global movement
“Black Lives Matter”
and the broad
racism debate,
the municipal coat of arms came to the test.
The doubts also related to the
“Unterföhringer Mohr”
culture prize
, which was introduced in 2010 and is endowed with 4,000 euros.
"Mohr" in Unterföhring deleted: the municipality renames the culture prize
Mayor Andreas Kemmelmeyer (PWU) made it clear that the coat of arms was unchallenged for him.
However, he was open to a
debate
about the
culture award.
So he put the topic on the agenda for the September meeting, for which the municipal council met for the first time on Thursday in the Feststadl.
Is the bust
racist
?
“At the beginning I asked myself whether such a
discussion was even necessary
,” reported Barbara Schulte-Rief, head of the cultural office.
The community has done everything in recent years to give the award an integrative framework.
But then she spoke to friends, award winners and colleagues.
Her conclusion: “The
racism debate
has become extensive in Germany.
It is necessary that it is led. "
"Mohr" remains as a figure: Panel discussion on the design of the statue?
A look at the current Duden also taught them better: “The Duden defines the term
'Mohr'
as
discriminatory
.
That was new to me.
I thought the word was
old-fashioned
, but not discriminatory. ”The municipal council follows the Duden judgment.
The word
"Mohr"
has been deleted.
The prize is now called the
“Unterföhringer Culture Prize”.
But you hold onto the figure - at least for the time being.
The work, made by the Ismaning sculptor Margit Festl, was
"high quality and beautiful,"
said Schulte-Rief.
The association with colonialism that was expressed in the culture committee should be taken seriously, "but it is an individual
association," she
said.
Culture and homeland care would see the bust in a different context.
It is important to her to speak to those involved, affected and the audience "before a
black person
feels
offended
".
Therefore, she advised a panel discussion.
"Because simply to say, get rid of it, we will turn to the next topic," is not enough for her.
Discussion about "Mohr" in Unterföhring: "The price is racist"
City council member Saran Diané (SPD) has a different opinion.
The 19-year-old is
dark-skinned
herself
and spoke out in favor of a new beginning:
“The price is racist”
, even if it is not awarded with
racist
intent.
"It depends on the effect, on what
black people feel."
She spoke to other
blacks
“who, like me, have
experienced racism
.
They rather felt attacked ”.
The price is reminiscent of
colonialism
, "when black people were given away".
Diané restricted, “Of course I can't
speak
for all
blacks
.” While Schulte-Rief thanked her,
“that opens eyes”,
Second Mayor Manuel Prieler (PWU) refused to give her statement: “That we have a
racist
in Unterföhring
Awarding the culture prize
has never been claimed like this, I don't want to leave that behind. "
Despite renaming the Unterföhringer “Mohren”: The figure will be retained for the time being
Like Diané, the FDP and the Greens also distanced themselves from the figure: "If
only one person
feels
discriminated against
, that would be too much," said Third Mayor Johannes Mecke (Greens).
But the majority of the parish council (16: 8) stuck to the figure.
"You shouldn't abolish the price with the stroke of a pen," said Thomas Weingärtner (SPD).
He is convinced of the results-oriented discussion, as is Günther Ernstberger (PWU).
He said: "
Racism
does not take place in a figure or a coat of arms, but in the
head
."
